About stremma

The stremma is a traditional Greek unit of area equal to 1,000 square meters (1 stremma = 1,000 m2), the standard derived unit of area in the International System of Units (SI).

The stremma is also equal to 10 ares (a), or 1,000 centiares (ca) or 0.1 hectares (ha) (units of area in the metric system), or 0.001 square kilometers (km2) (a unit of area in the SI), or 0.98842 roods (an Imperial unit of area), or about 0.247105381 acres (ac), or 10,763.9104 square feet (sq ft) or 1,195.99005 square yards (sq yd), which are Imperial / US customary units of area.

Over time various stremma have been recorded, examples of which include:

  • The old "Turkish" or "Ottoman" stremma, equal to approximately 1,270 square meters (0.127 hectares or 0.313823834 acres)
  • The medieval or Morean stremma, a unit of area between 900 square meters (0.09 hectares or 0.222394843 acres) and 1,900 square meters (0.19 hectares or 0.469500225 acres) depending on the period of time
  • The Byzantine stremma, equal to 10,000 square Greek feet

The stremma is used for measuring land areas.
